We are thrilled to share one of our standout Passive Fire Protection projects, recently completed in the picturesque Cotswold Water Park.
On the border between Wiltshire and Gloucester sits Cotswold Water Park, which covers an area of 42mi2 and features an impressive 180 lakes. Especially through the winter months, the area and its infrastructure are exposed to the elements, with 6-9 months of severe weather conditions including strong winds. With this in mind, we were tasked with applying a passive fire protection system to the steel frame prior to the continuation of building works.
From the beginning of the process, we were actively involved. We specified a high-performance dry-fall solvent-based product which would ensure easy removal and cleaning of any overspray drift: the high winds meant we had a loss fact of 120%, so this was paramount. Our applicators, trained to the highest standards by Corrodere Academy, applied a Thin Film Intumescent Coating to the frame. In the event of a fire, the coating will expand as it heats, lengthening the amount of time the heat takes to reach, and weaken, the steel frame. This improves the fire safety of the building by providing those inside the building with the time needed to evacuate.
Our fire protection application process culminated in a smooth final inspection by our certified SSPC Level 2 Fireproofing Inspector, after which we were able to supply Building Control with the certifications required for compliance.
For complex applications such as this one, we work closely with architects and fire officers to specify the best-tested products suited to the environmental conditions. Every project has different challenges and failing to consider these can have a huge negative impact on the project.
