In certain scenarios, traditional mechanical methods may prove impractical or insufficient for achieving optimal surface preparation. That’s where our Chemical Treatment services, including acid etching, cleaning, conversion coating and phosphating, come into play.
Chemical surface etching is a process used to alter a material’s surface through the application of specific chemicals in order to prepare it for the application of a protective coating. It involves selectively removing material from the surface to create a textured or roughened surface, which can enhance adhesion and promote bonding. It also cleans the surface of any contaminants.
This chemical surface preparation technique involves the application of a phosphate coating, typically through immersion in a phosphoric acid solution. A chemical reaction occurs between the solution and the substrate, creating a strong, durable layer. Phosphating is used for metals like steel and aluminium, providing resistance to corrosion and preparing the surface for new coatings.
Unlike phosphating, which deposits a phosphate layer on the metal surface, conversion coating chemically converts the surface layer of the metal into a different compound, usually a metal oxide or phosphate compound. This conversion creates a protective layer that enhances corrosion resistance and improves adhesion of coatings. Conversion coating is most often used to treat metal substrates such as aluminium.
This surface preparation method involves the use of chemical solutions to remove contaminants, oils, greases, rust, scale, and other unwanted substances from the surface of materials such as metals, plastics, ceramics, and composites. Common chemical cleaning agents include acids, alkalis, solvents, surfactants, and chelating agents, each tailored to specific types of contaminants and materials.
The choice of method depends on factors such as surface type, contaminants, and the specific requirements of subsequent treatments. Effective surface preparation is critical for ensuring the durability, adhesion, and longevity of coatings or finishes applied to a substrate.
