Hydroblasting

high & ultra high pressure Water jetting

HPWJ and UHPWJ, also known as hydroblasting, are powerful surface preparation techniques which use high-speed water jets to remove contaminants, rust, and old coatings from surfaces in preparation for the application of a new protective coating.

high pressure water jetting

10,000 – 25,000 psi

Ultra high pressure water jetting

25,000 – 40,000 psi

HOW DOES IT WORK?

At SCI, we use water jetting as a method of surface preparation to remove contaminants from surfaces using high-pressure water streams generated by specialised pumps.

Our specialist team then direct the water at the surface through nozzles which focus it into a jet capable of easily removing materials such as dirt, resins, rust, chemical residues, epoxy, and paint. We wash these waste materials away before collecting them using vacuum systems and drainage channels.

Common applications

We use UHPWJ in a range of applications, including:

  • Surface preparation to improve adhesion of new coatings,
  • Restoration of floors and pavements,
  • Removal of painted road markings,
  • Pipe cleaning and descaling,
  • Removal of contaminants from soil and groundwater,
  • Cleaning of ship hulls to remove algae and barnacles,
  • Removal of old or damaged concrete,
  • Graffiti removal from infrastructure including bridges, and
  • Rust removal in industrial settings.

WHEN CAN WATER JETTING BE USED INSTEAD OF ABRASIVE BLASTING?

On fragile surfaces which require a softer blasting material in order to prevent damage to it

Near aquatic environments which could be particularly impacted by waste from abrasive blasting

In urban or residential areas, as dust from abrasive blasting can have an impact on public health

Within industrial environments due to the possibility of dry sparks created by abrasive blasting dust

Around complex equipment or machinery which could be affected by abrasive blasting dust

Due to the hazards associated with the technique, High and Ultra-High Pressure Water Jetting must be carried out by highly trained professionals. This means that proper training, equipment, and safety measures are paramount to ensuring a successful and effective process.

UHP Water Jetting does not create dust, which makes it an ideal choice for projects with specific environmental requirements or public health considerations. Generally, water jetting is considered to be a more eco-friendly option than abrasive blasting – due to the waste associated with the latter.

We work with ICORR and SSPC certified inspectors to guarantee compliance. View our full list of accreditations including ConstructionLine Gold and Acclaim Health & Safety on our about page.
